About This Project

The ‘Young Author’ activity engages children and youth to create stories around a variety of topics, such as the joys and challenges of being a child, local development issues that impact children, and/or youth culture and identity. Over a series of workshops, children and youth work with creative writing and art teachers to learn how to draw, write, conduct interviews, and take photographs. As they learn these skills, the participants also produce a collection of various works (comics, photo essays, biographical short stories, and interviews) that reflect their lived experiences and those of their peers. Along with learning new skills, the participants are also encouraged to express their ideas and opinions and think about the broader issues facing children in Laos. The final result is the compilation of a book that contains their stories, which is published and distributed in their community, as well as other communities in Laos.
